Description

The 2013 Jetta Hybrid launched during a market shift away from sedans and toward SUVs, with consumer interest still primarily focused on gasoline-powered vehicles. In hindsight, this model was ahead of its time—its hybrid powertrain concept is now resurfacing in many modern vehicles using similar technical foundations.

Although the Jetta Hybrid featured only minor aesthetic updates compared to its gasoline counterpart—such as redesigned LED headlamps, a new front grille, and updated interiors—the underlying development was complex. Integrating hybrid technology required major changes, including the packaging of the high-voltage battery, energy management system, electric motor, and associated HV wiring throughout the vehicle. Every ECU in the system needed either a software update or re-coding to recognize it was now part of a hybrid architecture—long before zonal architectures simplified such integration. At the time, even small-function ECUs were developed by different suppliers, adding another layer of coordination.

Beyond the product itself, the Jetta Hybrid demanded transformation of the manufacturing infrastructure at the Puebla plant. This included the setup of specialized stations for HV component installation and workforce training on high-voltage safety protocols.

As the Electrical Coordination Lead, I was responsible for ensuring timely delivery of technical documentation, test samples, and pre-series components by all suppliers. I also tracked and reported the progress of Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) and safety testing, and ensured the validation of all ECUs, harnesses, and relays with their respective development releases (B and BMG).
