Description

The New Beetle is undoubtedly one of the most iconic vehicles in the VW brand’s history. In its final years of production, several special edition models were launched as part of a coordinated effort between marketing and engineering to give this classic car a proper farewell. These editions included the Denim, Dune, Fender (my personal favorite), Pink, GSR, and even the iBeetle, which featured an integrated iPhone holder in the dashboard. Built on the trusted PQ34 platform, this global product offered limited capabilities, but very reliable electric systems.

My role in this project was the coordination within the R&D department, overseeing numerous vehicle-specific enhancements. The high level of customization and variety of special editions presented unique challenges. For instance, integrating the rear-view camera into the VW emblem was an innovative solution for protection of the camera, but the emblem’s tilt raised issues with water ingress that had to be carefully addressed. Additionally, fine-tuning the window behavior for the Cabriolet model required multiple iterations. Finally, managing the complexity of over 20 markets and various vehicle configurations—such as left- and right-hand drive—demanded meticulous attention to the Bill of Materials (BOM), particularly regarding wiring and accesories.
